Our Head Chef and Owner, Marc is passionate about sharing his love of French cuisine, inspired by the “grandmother’s kitchen” dishes he would enjoy at his local Parisian bistro growing up in Paris: good quality French traditional dishes.
Marc’s partner in life and business is Rachel Winter Jones, who is Bistro Marc at Winter’s Co-Director and Business & PR Manager.
Rachel and Marc actually met in a Paris bistro on a ‘surprise’ blind date back in 2004. Rachel grew up in Didsbury. Chef Marc and Rachel, their two teenagers, and two dogs, now call Stockport, home.
And there is a third partner in Bistro Marc at Winter’s -- the iconic Grade II listed Winter’s building itself. It’s a local landmark and part of Stockport’s heritage trail.
As soon as Marc and Rachel walked into the Winter’s building in January 2019, they knew it would be the perfect location, despite it needing major renovations! And Bistro Marc at Winter’s was born!
The Winter’s building has a rich and fascinating history, starting life as a watch, clock maker and jewellers when its namesake, Jacob Winter, moved his company to Little Underbank in 1890.
Jacob Winter opened his first jewellers in Higher Hillgate, Stockport in 1859 after leaving London at the age of 15 to seek his fortune in the more prosperous North of England.
He was an innovator, fascinated by technology, and introduced electricity into the building as early as 1898, one of the first to do so in Stockport. He also used the local water supply from a spring at the Market Place, engineering the shop window display to rise and fall by hydraulic power into a vault in the basement to protect the most precious jewellery.
Dining at Bistro Marc at Winter’s is set over the ground and first floors. The first floor has the added attraction of the newly renovated Winter’s fascinating internal clock mechanism in a new display cabinet.
We are so proud that when you dine you will once again hear the soldier and sailor ring the quarters, and Old Father Time, the hours.
We know local people have very fond memories from their childhood of coming to see and hear the clock chime. It’s a very charming chime to accompany your dining experience.
Marc and Rachel cannot wait to welcome you!
